Walking For a Cause by Eloise Odom There are numerous reasons why participat ing in Walk Stanly is an extremely rewarding experience. One main reason is to lower the number of babies bom dead or unpaired. Rac ing 24th in the world in infant mortality, the US has thousands of babies who die each year. North Carolina is ranked 43rd in the US. Another important reason why fund raisers such as Walk Stanly are important is that money raised assists women who need early and regular prenatal care. This care alone makes a dramatic improvement on the outcome of pregnancy. The following are a few important statistics of birth defects in Stanly County and the rest of ^n 1W4 four infant deaths occurred before age one in Stanly County, and two of these died less than 28 days after birth. u ihc S -56 babies were bom weighing less than 5 lbs. 8 oz., and 8 were bom weighing less than two pounds in Stanly County. number one cause o f infant deaths in the US is birth defects. .. u- .i, .150.000 babies are bom each year with birth more jMLhofDi»,= .n-800-273-2009. one Saturday to Walk Stanly and get mvolved Gary Her. By Kelly Rakes AHS has many honors for students who excel in academic areas such as math, science, history, English, and Spanish. Honors include National Honor Society and La Sociedad Honoraria Hispancica. La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, or the Spanish National Honor Society, is a great achievement, especially for those who have been studying the Spanish language for two or more years. New members will be initiated in the Sfjring of this year. Many academic students wonder what the qualifications are. Students who qualify are those who demonstrate superior achievement in Spanish I, II, El. This is a national organization in which the top Spanish students across the coimtry are recognized for their outstanding study habits and their excellent grades in Spanish. Graduating students will be honored at the commencement ceremony with gold and red honor cords. New members will be announced in March or April of this year. Good luck to those academically strong stu dents who are chosen to take part in La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. Mrs. Harvey will notify those students eligible for the Spanish National Honor Society in March or April. Last year's inductees are planning the ceremony for new members. Surfing the Internet By Eloise Odom Mrs. Wolfe helps George get on-line. For more than two months, AHS’s library has been working on the installation of computer hardware that will allow the library to have access to the Internet. So far a Communications Management Series/Digital Scrv ice Unit has been installed in the media center workroom and we officially went "on-line" on March 4,1996. All freshmen classes and all but one sophmore class have had some instruction on Internet ter minology and policies. Unfortunately, many juniors and seniors are not familiar with the skills that are needed to use the Internet. AHS hopes that the media center will jjrovide these students with the opportunity to become familiar with the world of cyberspace. Two computer labs are now networked with the file server in the media center and will access both the card catalog and the Internet. Future plans include dropping the cable into all English classrooms so that they will all have the opportu nity to use the Internet.
